Iron Horse Trail Hike or Briones Park Trail?

Friday’s Hike Up in the Air

Since it looks like rain or snow on Friday morning I think beginning the Iron Horse Trail at the Sycamore Park & Ride would be a good choice. We can take it towards Danville where we can duck into buildings if we get a sudden down pour. If it looks like we will not have rain or snow I would like to go to Briones park trail at the entrance off of Pleasanton Hill Rd., the first exit off of 24. It is in total sunllight and switchbacks up the mountain. It is an out and back hike.

We will leave the Sycamore Valley Park and Ride at 8:30am and see how far the weather allows us to go. Please let me know if you can join me. If the weather looks likes it being delayed for later on Friday, I will email you the we will be going to Briones park trail.

Water, Water Everywhere – Lafayette Reservoir

Lafayette CA ReservoirLafayette Reservoir Hike

Today six of us hiked at the Lafayette Reservoir. The rain held off for our first trip around the reservoir. After that, we braved the drizzle and then light rain.

Fran, who led the hike, took our group photo of the children’s playground.

Redwood Park Hike

Hiking in Redwood Park

Here is the group photo from last week at Redwood Park. Muff, Shirley, Rose, Sharon, Cheryl and Pat joined me on the hike.

Redwood Park Hike

Here is the photo from today’s hike on the Rossmoor Trail. Sharon, Shirley, Muff, Aleta, Angelika and Pat take a break on this rod iron bench at the top of a peak. We were wondering how it got there. It looks like a bench you would see in a garden, not a park type bench. Barbara and Sondra joined us for lunch. Aleta made a chocolate cake with tasty fudge-like frosting. We sang a rousing, but somewhat off key, Happy Birthday to Sharon and truly enjoyed the cake and each others company.

Regional Park Hike

The foggy skies made for some interesting photography.

The streams were flowing and the trails muddy but not enough to keep us from side stepping the muddy spots.

Fran has the group shot. Thanks for the fun hike, as always, Fran!

Pleasanton CA Hike

(Level-Headed?) Hiking in Pleasanton California

pleasanton california hikeAleta, Shirley and Cheryl joined me on this mostly paved level trail in Pleasanton. It was overcast, but on rain. You can’t see the birds but in the background there are turkey vultures on the left bank and ducks in the water. This is a small pond along the trail. Bobbie joined us briefly at the end of lunch and we all had a spa hand treatment right there on the lunch table, nice treat.

Wishing all of you the warmest of Holidays.

Green Valley Trail Hike

Hiking the Green Valley Trail

Green Valley TrailOn Nov. 12, Muff, Barbara, Lois, Shirley, Aleta, Joan, Sharon and Shirley’s guest Reesa hiked out on Green Valley Trail at the base of Mt. Diablo. The trail is a steady climb with several big ups and downs.

Most of the trail is through open space with the end of the trail taking the group through a tree lined ravine where they reached a road and some houses. The object of the hike was to see how far along this large estate was compared with when we saw it in June of 2009.

I didn’t take any photos of the original construction site although the one neighboring house we questioned was there in 2009. There is still a lot of work left on this big estate which means in another year we will return to see if it is completed.

Muff, Lois and I were the only repeat hikers this year. It was a good 3 1/2 mile workout.

Happy Trails, Sharon

Sunol Park Hike

Hiking at Sunol Park

Sunol Park HikeWe had a nice, sunny hike at Sunol Park on Friday, November 5. Pat, Shirley, Sharon, Muff, Barbara and Aleta joined me.

As you can see from the photo, Little Yosemite falls is not flowing this time of the year.

We took Cerro Este trail to McCorkle Trail instead of Canyon View trail and had quite a climb and great views. At one point we ended up in a cow pasture and retraced our steps to an ill defined fork off of our trail.

I believe the water in the background is part of the San francisco water district. Does anyone know its name? It is not on the Sunol map.

Mitchell Canyon Trail Hike

Mitchell Canyon Trail HikeHiking Mitchell Canyon Trail

Muff, Angelika, Shirley (welcome back), Pat, Sharon joined me for the hike on Mitchell Canyon Trail.  It was a nice cool day with clouds but no rain.

We saw 4 tarantulas going out on the trail and one on the return. They are such interesting spiders, so bushy-looking and large. Sharon has posted them on her Kodak site.

The DAR posted a marker for a bicenntinial oak tree, Muff is standing next to it as a member of that group. The group shot was taken a little further up hill  from the short stream extension trail where it opens up for a nice mountain view.

Bagels and coffee warmed us up after the hike.

Bear Creek Trail Hike

Hiking Bear Creek Trail

We hiked the trail across the water from the Bear Creek trail that we usually hike. As you can see it was mostly open with walking on a fire road. We did have several short steep ups and downs which seemed to tire us more than we excepted. The “chomps” helped us regain our energy. Sharon took great photos of the egrets in the water. Wonderful open views of the reservoir.  Angelika, Aleta, Muff and Sharon joined me.

Cogswell Marsh Hike

Hayward Regional Shoreline Hike

Cogswell Marsh HaywardLast Friday, Oct 1st we ventured out to Hayward to hike along the marshes at Hayward Regional Shoreline. We started at the trail head at the western end of Winton Ave. This was a different starting point from where we previously hiked this Regional Park  when we started out at the Interpretive Center. It was a clear, cool day with little wind. We hiked for 5.2 miles(thanks for adding up the miles Aleta) in two hours.

Our hike took us by several ponds, channels, and the bay shore where we saw numerous birds including the Great Egret, the Snowy Egret, Avocets, Mallards, Sandpipers, and Marbled Godwits with their long bills forging in the mud. The bright pink pickle weed lite up the marshes with brilliant color.

Hikers were Aleta, Angelika, Barbara C., Joan D., and Sharon K. Welcome back Barbara after a long absence and Joan after a shorter absence.

After our hike we stopped by the Winton Deli for soup, salads, and sandwiches.

Happy Trails, Sharon K.
