Hiking the Trails

hiking san ramonNewcomer Hike Las Trampas – Del Amigo, Virgil Williams, and Madrone Trails

We have a view of Mt. Diablo behind us as we climb up steep Del Amigo Trail

The group hikes on Madrone Trail over to the Eugene O’Neill Historical Site before we head uphill. The grasses are very dry and the day is hot.

Much of the rest of the hike will be in the shade but there will be many ups before we are through with our 2 hour hike.

We see a cow by the green pond

Another up, this time Shirley and Aleta lead the way. We hiked for a total of two hours. It was very hot so we were happy to be off the trail by 11 AM.

Unfortunately, Bobbi had quite a fall hurting her knee and cutting her lip. She went home to ice and rest after our hike. We hope you are recovering nicely and will be good as new for your trip to France!

Hikers today were Muff, Jeanne, Bobbi, Pat, Shirley, Aleta, and Claudila

Happy Trails, Sharon

Last Hike of August

Another nice hike today

Lot of ducks and turtles.

Remember everyone, Jeanne will be leading the hike next week to Pleasanton Ridge. Look for details next Wednesday.

Fran and I will see you in a couple of weeks after our Yosemite trip. Have fun next week! Sharon

Duck Hike

Friday’s Hike

Another great hike today Fran! The clarkia’s, the elegant and wine cup, are in abundance this summer. I also saw wild roses, Indian paintbrush and California poppy. It was a good workout with a lovely view of Mt. Diablo. Happy Trails, Sharon

Friday's Hike

July Hike – Shell Ridge

Hiking Shell Ridge

Hiking Shell RidgeToday we hiked at Shell Ridge. Although it was warm a breeze kept the morning hike comfortable.

We hiked along Indian Creek which was very dry except for the frog pond where we were lucky enough to see tadpoles and hundreds of tiny frogs. You can tell by the photo how little the frog was next to the leaves.

Muff spotted a bring red crab apple. Hikers today were birthday girl Barbara J., Claudia, Shirley, Muff, Jeanne, Bobbi, new member Carol S., and Sharon K. Half of the group hiked up steep Kovar Trail while half of us went up the less steep side and met the group at the top of the hill.

Barbara reported that the steep hikers saw lots of bright blue penstemon and cardinal flowers.

We hiked for about one hour 40 minutes and then went to Bagel Street Cafe where we celebrated Barbara’s birthday with a big slice of chocolate cake divided seven ways!

Happy Trails, Sharon K.

Huckleberry Preserve Hike

Hiking Huckleberry Preserve – Berkeley CA

Huckleberry-Preserve hike Berkeley CAToday we hiked at Huckleberry Preserve in Berkeley enjoying the fern covered hills with beautiful views of Mt. Diablo.

It was an easy 2 1/2 mile hike which we did in about 1 1/2 hr. Jeanne, Bobbi, Claudia, Kathy and I enjoyed the botanical descriptions of the different plants provided by a trail brochure while Barbara, Aleta, and Shirley hiked ahead at a little faster pace. They also added on a little side trail to their hike. We all met at a trail intersection near the end and had our group photo taken.

The temperature was perfect and by the time we drove back on Grizzly Peak Rd the fog had lifted and we had great views of the city.

Afterwards most of us had lunch at Bagel Street Cafe where we expected to see Angelika one last time before she heads off to Switzerland on Wednesday but something came up and she was unable to join us. We wish you farewell Angelika. You will not be forgotten!

Happy Trails, Sharon

Los Vaqueros Watershed Hike

hiking Los Vaqueros watershedHiking the Los Vaqueros Watershed

We had a wild, windy hike on the open hills of Los Vaqueros watershed on Friday. It was also foggy most of the hike.

I managed to get a photo of the reservoir when it started clearing near the end of the hike. Claudia, Cheryl, Bobbie, pat, Jeanne, and Muff joined me and we would like to hike it again when we can actually see the surrounding area.

Hard to believe that we could hike this area in July and 60′s weather.

Trekking always

Bon Voyage Hike with Angelika

San Ramon Newcomer Moving Home to Switzerland

san ramon newcomers hikeFriday was a celebration of our hiking days with Angelika over the last 5 years. She joined us every Friday except for her family vacations. We were enlightened and enjoyed her stories about Switzerland. These conversations brought back to us the difference between our U.S. lifestyles and her home country’s.

We did hit one of the hot days for hiking but some of us climbed down the boulders at Little Yosemite to enjoy the cool water and wet our bandanas. You can tell hardly see the crystal-clear water in the photo. We shortened our hike by looping around on the canyon view trail where we caught a welcomed breeze. A kind hiker took a photo of us with some of the rolling hills behind.

We had our picnic in Alameda Grove at what may become “our celebration place”. In our group photo are Kathy, Sharon, Angelika, Pat Cecila, Jeanne, Barbara. Bobbie, Shirley, Sondra. Aleta and I are not in the photo.

Angelika was surprised by the gift of a photo album of Newcomer Hikes she has enjoyed with us over the years. Sharon designed and then presented this beautiful album to her. We all loved the photos! We ended the day with a delicious cake Bobbie made that included a small Swiss flag.

Wonderful time, wonderful friends, and wonderful “Bon Vogage” for Angelika!

Old Briones Road Hike

Hiking Old Briones Road in Martinez, CA

Old Briones Trail HikeLast Friday Jeanne, Bobbie, Kathy, Pat, Claudia, Shirley and Aleta joined me for this interesting loop hike. We passed through grasslands on Old Briones Road Trail, and uphill on Briones Crest and Mott Peak trails with lagoons and then a shady down hill on Abrigo trail. We had great views and I think one of our best loop hike.

Brushy Peak Preserve Hike

Hiking Brushy Peak Preserve

Brushy Peak Preserve CaliforniaWe had a lovely, windy hike at Brushy Peak Preserve on Friday. We actually completed the 2 loops in a figure eight configuration. Aleta, Jeanne, Muff, Barbara, Sharon, Pat, Bobbie, Claudia, Shirley, Angelika and Rose are standing below Brushy peak. We went to the Livery Bay street Bagels for lunch and had cake and sang Happy Birthday to Aleta. Her birthday is today. Thanked her for all her driving over the years with her van and stepping in to lead hikes when Sharon and I are away.

Trekking Always, Fran

Brushy Peak is a 1,702-foot landmark at the juncture of the San Francisco Bay Area, the California Delta, and the Central Valley. The peak and its environs have been recognized as sacred by generations of native Californians. Due to its geographical position, the area lies at the center of a network of ancient trade routes that linked Bay Area Ohlones, Bay Miwoks, and Northern Valley Yokuts, who were drawn to the area for economic, social, and ceremonial events
