Upcoming Luncheons

For February:  We have Dora Sorell, a renowned bay area Holocaust survivor and author of Tell the Children, Letters to Miriam.  She will speak on her exprience in the Auschwitz concentration camp.

Amazon.com review: An absorbing personal history by a survivor, December 7, 1998

By A Customer: Tell the Children is a vivid story so well told that it is hard to believe its author is not a professional writer. Dora Sorell was taken by the Nazis from her home in a Romanian village to some of the worst concentration camps, where she managed not only to survive but also to be reunited with her childhood sweetheart, to become a physician, to experience years of almost unimaginable horror under Communist rule, and to escape successively to Italy, Brazil, and finally the United States. Her chronicle, presented as letters to her granddaughter, benefits from sharp perception, a powerful memory, an extraordinary interest in the people around her (including a large and interesting family), and a genuine ability at storytelling. Unpretentious as she is, Dora Sorell is a heroic woman. Her book is unpreachy and unsentimental but deeply felt, and for me it made a lot of modern history seem real for as if the first time.

Stephen-ronanFor March:  Stephen Ronan M.D. F. A. C. S. of Blackhawk Plastic Surgery and Pam Linney Of Radiance Day Spa will be our speakers.  They will speaking on skin care including Non-Surgical Skin Tightening and Dr. Ronan will speak on plastic Surgery including Abdominoplasty (tummy tuck), short scar face lift, eyelid brow lift, Botox & Restylane, Laser rejuvenation, etc. Click here for more info:  www.blackhawkplasticsurgery.com

Alden-laneFor May:  We are going to Alden Lane Nursery in Livermore in which they will have a planting demonstration and we will have our installation of the new board.

Alden Lane Nursery is a full service garden center with a wonderful selection of plant materials and garden accessories serving the community since 1955, but the real beauty of Alden Lane is its setting. Situated amongst centuries-old valley oak trees on the south side of the Livermore Valley, Alden Lane Nursery is a destination for peaceful inspiration.  Click here for more info:  www.aldenlane.com

Wine Appreciation Oct. 20, 2007

winetasting1_oct07_sm.jpgThank you Vel and Rich for hosting the San Ramon Newcomers Group’s October Wine Tasting event at your beautiful home. The evening was a lot of fun and filled with fine wines and great company.

bob_winner_sm.jpg

We had a blind tasting of several wines including two wines from Stony Ridge (one Orobiano and one Chardonnay). a third wine from Rios-Lovell Estate (Petite Sirah) and our forth was from Retzlaff (Merlot). All from the Livermore Valley. The winner for the evening was Bob with a perfect score!!! Way to go, 8 out of 8 correct! Bob, you really know your wine. We’re all looking forward to November 18 for our next wine tasting event at Lee and George’s home where they will feature Spanish Wines.

October Luncheon

Luncheon Oct 07The October SRVNC luncheon was a smorgasbord of foot long club sandwiches, mile high Cobb salads and piles of corned beef reubens. Our guest speaker was Lori Ferreyra, a local girl (all 5”3” and about 110 lbs. of her) who told exciting stories of her 19 years of being on the Hayward police force.

Lori FerreyraShe then went on to give invaluable advice on personal safety, home security and identity theft prevention. She stated that everyone in the room falls into one of two categories, either you have already been a victim of identity theft or you fall into the group that will be a victim at sometime in the future (it is that prevalent and growing). Lori recommended that everyone get a locking mailbox and she handed out an Identity Theft Prevention document (following are a few excerpts):

- Stop Pre-approved Credit Offers and Phone Solicitation – www.donotcall.gov.
- Remove Your Name From Credit Bureau Marketing Lists – 1-888-567-8688.
- Do not provide your Social Security # over the phone or Internet.

Thank you Lori Ferreyra for a fun and informative afternoon.

See Ya!

Shell Ridge Hike – 7/13

Hi Friday Newcomers,

Marlene Taber and I hiked two hours this morning at the Shell Ridge Open Space in Walnut Creek. Beginning at 8:30 and ending at 10:30. There wasn’t a cloud in the sky and we were blessed with cool breezes and clear vistas. We could see as far as Concord, the Delta and beyond.

We did the Briones to Mt. Diablo Trail picking up a new trail for me, the Ridge Trail which was beautiful and circled around and took us back to Briones.

We didn’t see any wildflowers or many critters other than squirrels and hawks. We saw lots and lots of poison oak and many young oaks that had been planted by volunteers. LIFE IS GOOD!

Happy Trails,

Barbara
