Maquire Peak at Sunol Hike

Hi Newcomer Hikers and Guests,

Today was a picture perfect day to hike Maquire Peak at Sunol. The trail is a steady hike up to the Peak but the beautiful views of the hillsides, clouds, and oak trees provided a wonderful backdrop. On the way to the main park entrance we spotted two young deer bounding along the side of the road. It was amazing to see them run down a steep embankment–talk about being shear footed. They didn’t even need hiking poles. We also saw one lone turkey. Most of them must have gotten the word that Thanksgiving is near.

sunol hikeToday’s hikers were Shirley A., Barbara J., Celia M. and Sharon K.  We hiked a about 2 1/2 miles up to the peak and then 2 1/2 miles back in a little less than two hours breaking the old newcomer record of 2 1/2 hours.  We all got our hearts   pumping, not hard considering most of us haven’t done that much hiking recently. On the single track trail we saw three cows, including a mama and her baby. It was obvious the birth had been quite recent since the umbilical cord was still dangling. The mother was licking the calf tenderly. We stopped and quietly walked by.

Hikers maquire peakAt the top of the peak we stopped to enjoy the view and of course have our photo taken. Here were spotted the Cardinal flower and some vinegar weed–the last of the wildflowers for the season.

Our next hike will be Oct 19th. I am looking for a volunteer leader as I will be back in Atlanta helping my daughter move. Please let me know if you are willing to fill in for me.  If you need help in planning the hike and sending out the information I will be glad to help with that.

Thank you in advance and happy trails, Sharon
