PRESIDENTS MESSAGE

Hi Gals. I guess we are officially into fall. I look forward to it every year, except for the fact that it portends winter-oh well-you can’t have everything!

Every month I try to recognize people who make our club, board and my life easier. Sharon Morrison has been a wonderful mentor for me. She is right on top of things when we have to make changes and is a great listener when I have “issues”. One of these “issues” is the inconsistency some of our activities have getting correct info to Mickey. We have decided to have ALL articles and notices in by NO LATER than the 15th of each month. The website will have it online on or about the 20th of each month.

All members with e-mail will get a reminder that the newsletter is ready and can update their personal calendar. Having a consistent time each month will or should get everyone back into the habit of reading their newsletter in plenty of time to mark their calendar and make reservations for the upcoming month. Also, if these chairpeople would send their articles to me, John and I will proofread them to make sure nothing was left out, and then forward them to Mickey.

If any of our members have a problem that needs addressing, please let me know and I will bring it to the board. Whether we can fix it or not, you will have an answer as soon as the board meets. Also, please feel free to attend any board meeting during the year. It’s the 1st Monday every month and they are usually fun. Come join us and see how your club works as well as having a mid-morning snack. We value our volunteers, so if any have some free time, please consider joining this great bunch.

Thanks for listening, gals-Hugs, Myrna

Bobbi Shenk’s craft day

pumpkins san ramonWow-what a great time we had at Bobbi Shenk’s craft day. I am so not crafty-the only time I have ever used a glue gun was at her house. I couldn’t resist trying to make those beautifully decorated pumpkins for my grandkids. Now I wish I had kept it-oh well, there’s always next year. Myrna

September Wine Styles

winestyles san ramonWell it was another great evening of good friends and excellent wine. Hosted by Jan and Paula (way to go ladies) and held at Wine Styles in San Ramon. The theme was Wine from around the world. From France to Australia to Italy to Chile and oh don’t forget California. There was something for everyone. The overwhelming favorite was “McNabridge Winery - Niemi Vineyard French Colombard - 2006″. Several of us left with more than one bottle. This is a white wine that is crisp, clean and fun to drink! And at $11.99 a bottle, not badly priced.

If you’re not a wine connoisseur and feel a little intimidated by wine stores, Wine Styles is for you. Their concept is SIMPLE. All wines are grouped into one of eight styles - four whites: Crisp, Silky, Rich or Bubbly and four reds: Fruity, Mellow, Bold and Nectar.

Check it out and ask for Dan, he’s great.

Cheese Strata Recipe

Thank you Pat for hosting such a delightful coffee for new, prospective, and of course current members. For those of you that didn’t attend, the Cheese Strata was outstanding and with the holidays right around the corner we could all probably use an excellent , EASY recipe. Pat got the recipe from our Newcomers’ Cookbook (no longer available), but for those new members like myself, here’s the recipe:

CHEESE STRATA

8 - 9 Eggs - Beaten

3 1/2 C. Milk

1/2 tsp Dried Mustard

1/2 tsp Pepper

1/4 tsp Red Pepper

1 tsp Salt

1 Box Herbed Seasoned Croutons

8 oz. Sharp Cheddar Cheese - Grated

Preheat oven to 350.  Butter 9×13 pan.  Place croutons in buttered pan.  Mix all other ingredients except cheese and then pour over croutons.  Top with cheese.  Refrigerate at least 2 hours or overnight.  Bake approx. 60 minutes.

Diablo Foothills Hile

Hello Fellow Hikers,

Sharon was feeling a little under the weather today, so Rose, Cindy, guest Chris T. and I set off to hike in Diablo Foothills Regional Park.  The first mistake I made was driving south on 680 instead of north.  Duh!  We were talking so much we didn’t even notice until we saw the exit for Alcosta Blvd.  We quickly turned the car around and headed north.  (I’m sure you find this amusing Sharon!)

The weather was nice for hiking, not too hot thanks to the fog layer atop Mount Diablo. From the Livorna Staging Area our hike began on the Alamo Trail which wanders past some new homes, then climbs through grassy hillsides dotted with oak trees and small rock formations.  We took a slight detour on the Briones to Mount Diablo Trail and crossed over into Mount Diablo State Park which descends to the China Wall, a rocky reef formation.  Rose told us about a recent benefit dinner/auction that she attended for Mount Diablo which took place right at China Wall in the evening.  It sounded awesome.

From there we backtracked onto our original path and proceeded toward Stonegate Trail, not without passing it up on our first attempt.  We then finished the hike along Foothills Trail.  There were a few tricky unsigned junctions along the way, but we were able to stay on track (for the most part) and finish the 4.4 mile hike in slightly over two hours. Good job ladies.

It was nice having Chris hike with us today.  I hope to see you on future hikes.

Happy Trails to All!

Cathy
