May Wine Night

May_wine

It was another fun evening full of cheers and great conversation.  The nectar of the gods (wine) was provided by Pat and Ron Shockley, who hosted the event at their beautiful home in San Ramon.  The theme for the evening was California summertime red and white wines and there was a variety of tasty treats provided by all the guests.   If you enjoy good wine and great conversation with a truly eclectic group of people, come and join us at the next SRV Newcomers Wine Club get together.

May 16 Luncheon

The May 16 San Ramon Newcomers Club Luncheon was held at the San Ramon Marriott. It was a festive day for the Marriott as SRVNC members arrived decked out in colorful hats.

Myrna installed new officers and gave a moving speech thanking all members for their support during her operation and recuperation.

Tracey Harper along with her husband, Craig, gave a presentation on the new website.

And Mickey made off with all of the prizes as you can see in the photo below (actually she was handing the loot to the winners).

GOOD NEWS FOR SRVNC MEMBERS!!

We have listened to you questioning the increase in dues last year and revisited the budget. Our main expense - by a lot - was the newsletter.  Now, due to the fact that we are lucky enough to have Tracey Harper, who has created a beautiful web site from which we can get our newsletter among other features, and Mickey Fisher, who will handle those who are “computer free” from whom we can get our hard copy mailed newsletter, we can reduce our dues back to $25.00 and refund those members who have already paid their current dues. Gals, this will only work if you use the site - which is less difficult that looking up something on Google. We are counting on you to have an open mind and give it a chance. You won’t regret it - as a matter of fact you will love it.

Tracey is planning a short demo at our next luncheon which will display the computer on a screen.

Thanks so much - Myrna

Morgan Territory Hike

Today we hiked in Morgan Territory. We started out on Finley Rd which begins as an asphalt road and leads into the park where it becomes a dirt road. It was a beautiful, clear day starting off slightly cool. The California poppies were closed because of the cool temps but we saw lots of small pink geraniums lining the trail along with blue dick, a lot of Wally basket, and some sticky monkey flower. The Wally basket that caught our eyes was the single one growing in the middle of the road. We commented on how they survive in harsh conditions while we struggle in our gardens to get things to grow in the clay soil. (perhaps too much water and fertilizer?)

Today’s hikers were Marlene T., Barbara J., Cecilia M., Rose T., new member Barbara A. and Sharon Kovar–welcome Barbara! We hiked an hour out and an hour back along the easy wide trail with a few ups to get our hearts pumping. Everyone agreed the view from Sulphur Springs Trail was lovely. We hiked about 4 miles. Afterwards we had lunch at Bagel Street Cafe.

Don’t miss Gary Bogue at June 17 Luncheon

Our June luncheon at the Blackhawk Grille in Danville will be Thursday, June 17 with a special guest speaker, Gary Bogue.  Gary has been a daily newspaper columnist on pets, wildlife and environmental issues for Contra Costa Times for 36 years. Gary Bogue was Museum Curator for the Lindsay Wildlife Museum in Walnut Creek (1967-1979), and also Executive Director for Tony LaRussa’s Animal Rescue Foundation (ARF) (1992-1993). He has published four books to date: Its a Wild Life, Iris, Raptor Rehabilitation, The Raccoon Next Door, Getting Along With Urban Wildlife.
