Mt. Diablo Hike 4/13

mt diablo hikeHi Newcomer Friday Hikers

Today we had another great hike startiing at Juniper Campground at Mt Diablo. This trail is number 6 on the Mt Diablo Map. We did this in the reverse of what we did on the last Newcomer hike in this area. The wildflowers were amazing. We saw a lot of Diablo Bush Sunflower lining the trails along with both bush and miniture lupines. There were a lot of CA poppies, clarkia, blue dicks, freemont star lilly Owls clover, yellow viotets, a few shooting stars, popcorn flowers, wall flowers and chia.

san ramon hikeThe hike is 3.8 miles long, and 2.8 miles of that is uphill. The hike took us 2 1/2 hours…just what the Mt. D map suggests so we did really good. We stopped along the way for photos…..just a few.

Todays hikers were Marlene M., Floy H., Claudia W., April R., Lois T, and Sharon K.

I want to thank the many of you who have supported my 4 H’er hiking group in our effort to raise $1000. for MS. We willl be walking in SF this weekend We have reached our goal plus. Thank you. Thank you. Thank you.

Next week we will be hiking at Sunol followed by a picnic in honor of Floy who will be moving soon to southern CA. I will be sending out a sign up list this weekend to bring food.

Happy Trails, Sharon

Shell Ridge Hike

alamo hikeI have lost my hikiing stick sometime between Brooks Fall Loop on March 16th and our hike today. If anymore has found one, please let me know. I will be purchasing another one this weekend UNLESS either Jackey, Cathy, or Judie don’t claim yours. One of you left your in in my car.

It was a beautiful day for our hike at Shell san ramon newcomersRidge. Todays hikers were Aleta S., Judie B., Claudia W. (great to have you back!), Floy H., Barbara J., Jackey H., Cathy K., and Sharon K. The hills were a beautiful green. Barbara had to lead us onto Kovar trail as they moved the sign on me. What a surprise. I’m glad Barbara who claims these hills as her old stomping ground as with us today. Now it is Kovar’s Secret Trail that takes us up to the narrow ridge. There were not as many wildflowers as in previous years but we did see a few miniture lupine, the showy blue penstemon, mules ears, california poppies, geranium, and a profuse amount of buttercups. Its funny how one flower will dominate in certain years when the conditions are perfect for it.

After hiking Kovar Trail we hiked out on Indian Creek Trail and then back. Alot of people were out with their dogs todoy. We hiked for about 2 hours with a short side trip at the end to a neighborhood in Walnut Creek that had some large, new homes.

san ramon hikeAfterwards we had lunch at Bagel Street Cafe. It was a good day except for the sad news the Floy will be soon moving to southern Califonria. Hiking will not be the same without her. We will miss her positive attitude, interesting stories about her travels, and her knowledge about birds plus so much more.

Happy Trails, Shaorn
